Equal Opportunity (Miscellaneous) Amendment Bill 2008

Amendments to the Equal Opportunity Act were passed on 14 July 2009 and will come into force on a date to be fixed.

The amendments mean that it will now be unlawful for to discriminate against a person on grounds such as religious dress, caring responsibilities and breastfeeding. The amendments will go a long way towards making the workplace, marketplace and educational institutions fairer for all.

History

On 26 November 2008 the Equal Opportunity (Miscellaneous) Amendment Bill 2008 was introduced into Parliament.

The Bill covers new grounds of discrimination such as religious dress, caring responsibilities and breastfeeding and will avoid unfair treatment in the workplace, marketplace and at educational institutions.

This Bill goes a long way towards achieving equality for women, and indeed all South Australians.

In January 2009, the Minister for the Status of Women held 5 information sessions on the Equal Opportunity (Miscellaneous) Amendments Bill 2008. The sessions were held for key stakeholders representing groups and organisations most affected by the proposed changes. Stakeholders represented include education, carers, religious, culturally and linguistically diverse, disability, mental health and women.
